HOLIDAY FEAST A SUCCESS!!

   We thank everyone for their food/money donations, their assistance serving, setting up, cleaning up, roasting a turkey and for joining us for lunch on Thursday, Dec. 17^th.  We had 172 students, parents, community members, friends, school employees and relatives for lunch!  We thank Mr. Davis and the chorus for their holiday songs – it was a wonderful event!  Thank you to Jim and John in the kitchen for their timely work having the food ready to serve!!  We look forward to next year!

   Attached is the next lunch/breakfast menu and prepay envelope.  Please send it back to school on Wednesday, January 6, 2010.

 

BABYSITTER’S TRAINING CLASS HELD BY AMERICAN RED CROSS

   The American Red Cross will hold a Babysitter’s Training Class on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 from 9a.m. – 3p.m. at the Red Cross office at 81 High Street in Brattleboro.  Students 11-15 years old will get the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for infants and school-age children.  The course will also teach you how to be a good role model, make decisions, solve problems, and keep children safe, how to handle emergencies such as injuries, illnesses and household accidents, and how to write resumes and interview for jobs.  Call 802-254-2377 to sign up.  The course fee is $45.00.

 

REMINDER TO STUDENTS – SNEAKERS NEEDED!!

   We would like to remind students to bring sneakers to school so they don’t have to wear boots all day and to especially have them on Monday and Tuesdays on PE days.  If students have an extra pair they leave at school – that’s even better!!

 

WINTER SPORTS PROGRAM READY TO GO

   All students who signed up for ice skating will be able to go.  We have 10 students who have signed up – using the new form.  If you have not sent in the new form with plans for your child/children, you need to do so.  Please be certain to send in the $20.00 needed to participate in that sport.  Those who have not signed up for anything, nor said they are being picked up, need to let us know Monday, Jan. 4^th what your plans are.  The dates for the winter sports afternoons are:  Jan. 7,14,21,28, Feb. 4 and 18.  The busses will leave Dover School at noon to take students to the Hermitage to ice skate and to the Mountain for ski/boarding.  If you plan to pick your child up after the event – at school, the Hermitage or the Mountain – please send a letter to school.  You must let the person in charge of each event know when you actually take your child/children.  We need to know where every child is at all times.

 

7^TH GRADE INFORMATION NIGHT

   Remember – on Wednesday evening January 6, 2010 from 6 – 7:30p.m., various schools will be at Dover School with their presentations so parents and students may have this information prior to choosing a middle school.

Dover School Board Minutes

12-7-09 Meeting

(These minutes are not official as they have not been corrected or approved by the Dover School Board)

 

In Attendance:  Rich Werner, Vicki Capitani, Arlene Schertzer, Laura Sibilia, Traci Alfonso, Principal,-Bill           Anton, Helen Brown, Mark Marchese, Pam Horowitz, and at 7p.m., Steven John- Superintendent

Call Meeting to Order:  Rich called the meeting to order at 6:30p.m.

Minutes/Correspondence:  Laura moved to accept the 11/16/09 minutes as presented.  Second from Laura.  Unan.

·         Invitation to board to the Holiday Luncheon on 12/17/09 at Dover School at noon.

·         Information from Education Reform Committee

·         Hard copy of what plans are for Teacher’s/State Employees Retirement

·         Memo from Helen B. asking if school wants to keep the security light out by mailboxes.

-          Helen will check to see if Town wants to take it over, if not, notify CVPS to remove

 

Mark Marchese – fund raising- 6^th grade:

·         Mark had poster presenting idea for raffle of snowmobile(consignment w/Ruprecht)

·         $10.00 per ticket - $4900. needs to go to purchase snowmobile, after that, profit to 6^th grade.

·         Mark checked with proper authorities to be certain all bases were covered.

·         If not enough tickets sold, money would go back to ticket purchaser.

-           All info will be on tickets so they know who bought it/address/phone #

·         WTSA  will allow 3x week advertising, Valley News and Reformer will put in public notice

·         Several stores will allow space to show snowmobile and sell tickets

·         Board suggested perhaps they could, if not enough tickets sold – rather than refund money, advertise as a 50 -50 raffle of what funds are collected.

-          This would need to go on ticket and be approved by Ruprecht

·         Mark will check out the idea of 50 – 50 and let school know.

Laura made a motion to approve the 6^th grade fund raising request  as well as the 50-50 option if they so chose.  Second from Vicki. Unan.

Rich reminded Mark that funds should be turned in to school weekly.

Principal’s Report:  (see attached)

·         Bill explained the schools “Action Research Program”

·         Laura thanked Bill and staff for their work on this.

·         By June, Dover will have a model form in writing.

 

Superintendent’s Report: (see attached)

·         Proposed WCSU FY10 budget presented.

·         New numbers for special education – based on number of special ed. students in each school.

·         Rich thanked Steven and Frank for the change on special ed. computation.

·         Steven handed out two articles “Auditor Salmon Launches School Survey” and “Rebalancing education cost and value” - attached

·         WCSU Board Meeting 12/9/09 – Rich would like 2 Dover Board Members to attend.

Old Business:

·         Traci said she takes her daughter over to Three Dot Pottery to meet Career Center Bus, and that is working out well.

·         If more Dover students were to use the Career Center bus, Traci would then have her daughter take the bus from the East Dover Fire House.

·         Administration will get the word out to other students going to BAMS/BUHS

 

New Business:

·         Laura would like to see more press coverage for the “good things” happening at Dover School.

·         Vicki stated that there currently is quite a bit of coverage on Dover in paper

·         Bill is willing to do whatever he can

·         Vicki said maybe more items could be placed on school website

·         Steven John said it would be good to have a goal of what we are trying to achieve

·         Rich asked that one meeting in February 2010, we place “Discuss Media Presence” on agenda

 

Pay Warrants/Financials:

·         Vicki moved to approve the cafeteria bills in the amount of $626.29; school bills in the amount of $30,258.32; payroll in the amount of $24,897.64 and sub pay in the amount of $308.86.  Second from Laura.  Unan.

·         Motion made by Vicki to transfer the surplus funds from the 2008 – 2009 budget in the amount of $88,772.00 to the Capital Reserve Fund as voted at Town Meeting.  Second from Laura. Unan.

·         Rich brought to attention the following from the financials:

-          Watch Medicaid spending

-          Hot Breakfast/Lunch Program income is low

-          Our oil line item is plentiful due to the cost of our pre-buy oil

-          Need to be certain there is money to cover the classroom para in Pre-K as we did not budget for one

-          Vicki and Helen both stated the balance in oil line item would cover that expense

·         December 28, 2009 at 6:30p.m. – Budget Meeting

 

Executive Session:

·         Vicki moved to enter executive session at 8:13p.m. for personnel.  Second from Laura. Unan.

·         Vicki moved to exit executive session at 8:30p.m.  Second from Laura.  Unan.

·         The board will give feedback to Rich on personnel issue.

Dover School Budget Meeting

Monday, Nov. 16, 2009

6-8p.m.

 

(These minutes are not official as they have not been corrected or approved by the Dover School Board.)

In Attendance:  Vicki Capitani, Arlene Schertzer, Rich Werner, Traci Alfonso, Laura Sibilia (6:30p.m.), Bill Anton, Joan Black, Frank Rucker, Abigail Dillon, Helen Brown, Carrie and Colby Dix and Alison Sullivan.

·         Frank Rucker, CFO and Abigail Dillon, Special Education presented the WCSU assessment.

-          Discussed in length - the special education line item.

-          Dover would need one day of services; however, the assessment is based on ADM; so our assessment amount is approx. $79,000.

-          Board will meet to review and discuss options

·         Reviewed draft of FY’11 budget page by page

·         Vicki moved to approve the minutes as typed.  Second by Laura.  Unan.

·         Vicki moved to have the board chair sign the corrected certified staff contracts.  Second from Laura. Unan.

·         Next budget meeting Nov. 30^th. –  6-8p.m.

·         Items to have available:

-          Classroom schedules

-          Technology Capital Plan

-          Explanation for additional funds in supply lines, etc.
