THANK YOU MR. DAVIS

   We would like to thank Mr. Davis for another wonderful Dover School concert.  We are very fortunate to have Mr. Davis among our staff – his hard work does not go unnoticed!  Great job!

 

SNACK PROGRAM

   Just a reminder that the “Grab and Go” snack program began this week.  If you would like your child to receive a snack on any given day – send them with a dollar and they will take it to the kitchen at 9a.m., give it to Jim (our chef), pick up their snack and take it back to their room.  If they are signed up for breakfast, they immediately go down to breakfast upon arriving at school, have breakfast and return to their classrooms.  The snack program is not part of the free or reduced program – if you qualify for free or reduced, you must still remember to bring the $1.00 for snack.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the school.  Also, if you have ideas to share – healthy snacks your child likes, etc. please share that will us!

 

OOPS – HEAD LICE!

   We have heard that head lice is in one of our neighboring schools, and possibly in our area.  Please stress to your children not to use combs, brushes, hats, headbands, etc. that belong to others.  Also, please notify us if you find anything on your children so we can be on top of things here at school.  We will be checking students here sporadically.  Thanks!

 

SNOWSHOE FOR KNOWLEDGE

   Get outdoors, get healthy and support a local nonprofit organization at the Snowshoe for Knowledge! Experience the beauty of nature on the Hermitage trails with friends, family members, visitors and the local community.  You may pre-register by sending the Registration Form (on the front counter at school) to P.O. Box 275, Wilmington, Vt. 05363.  Please advise them if you will download your pledge sheet, or if one should be sent to you.  Cash or checks appreciated.  Checks should be made payable to DVHSV.  Adults: free with $100. or more in pledges, $15. with $50. or more in pledges, or $25. with no pledges.  Kids 0 – 5 yrs. of age free.  All kids must be accompanied by an adult.   This is a fund raising project benefiting the Deerfield Valley Health Care Volunteers.   Join in the fun - Feb. 13, 2010 from 1-5p.m. at the Hermitage Inn, 25 Handle Road, W. Dover, Vt. Registration 1-3p.m.  Snowshoe from 1-3:30p.m., 3-5p.m. Apres snowshoe reception and Silent Auction.

 

BRIDGET GARDNER’S DENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM

   On Monday, Feb. 1^st, Bridget Gardner will begin her dental health program.  Forms were attached to the last newsletter.  Bridget will be here for as many days it takes to clean the teeth of all students who signed up.

 

REMINDER

   Just a reminder to parents - do not drive up in front of the school to drop/pick up students (unless you have permission from Mr. Anton).  All students should be dropped off or picked up in the parking lot.  Students only look for busses in this area, so often do not look before bounding into the driveway to run to their car in the parking lot.  Safety is number one – please help keep our students safe!

 

 

 

NOON RELEASE/NO SCHOOL

   On Feb. 11^th students will be released at noon.  Lunch will be served prior to dismissal.

Winter break begins Feb. 22^nd.  Students have that week as well as March 1^st and 2^nd off.  March 2^nd is Town Meeting.  Students will be return to school on March 3^rd.  On March 11^th, there will be a noon release.  Once again, lunch will be served prior to dismissal.

 

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING FEB. 1^ST

   The Dover School Board will meet Monday evening, Feb. 1^st at 6:30p.m.  We wanted to remind parents that they are always welcome to attend these meetings.  They are usually held the first and third Monday of every month.  However, there are times (such as this month) that they could vary.  Please see the School Board bulletin board just inside the school on the right hand side.  This is where agendas and board minutes are posted.  Agendas always list the date and time of the meeting.  Come join us!

 

NOTES TO SCHOOL

   Please remember to send a note to school if you change your child/children’s end of the day transportation plans.  No student may automatically go with another student or parent at the end of the day without written permission.  If you plan to pick your child/children up when they usually take the bus, we prefer you send a note to school indicating this as well.  We realize there are times when plans change during the day.  At times like these, phone calls are fine.  Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation!

   Attached is the next breakfast/lunch/snack menu.  The envelope with payment is due on Wednesday, Feb. 3^rd.  Please be prompt so we have an accurate count. 

 

BRATTLEBORO AREA MIDLE SCHOOL’S ORIENTATION – Attention 6^th graders …..

   Brattleboro Area Middle School will be holding a 7^th grade orientation on Wednesday, March 10^th, from 8a.m. – 10:45a.m.at the school.  During this orientation, students will receive information of 7^th grade classes, see what a typical day looks like, talk with 7^th graders, attend two 7^th grade classes and go on a tour. 

   If you plan to attend, please RSVP by March 2^nd by calling the Brattleboro Area Middle School Counseling Department at 451-3500.  If you are going to attend, please send a note in to school letting us know you will be out that morning.

 

EGYPTIAN MUSEUM NIGHT

   On Wednesday, Feb. 3^rd, the 4^th, 5^th and 6^th grades are hosting their Egyptian Museum Night from 6 – 7p.m.  All of their work on Ancient Egypt will be on display.

WINTER CONCERT

   The PK – 6 Winter Concert will take place at Dover School on Wednesday, January 27 at 6:30p.m.  Songs, dances and instrumental performances will feature students in all grades and chorus.  Mark your calendar and come join us!  Students should be here by 6:20p.m. and report directly to their rooms.

 

NEW ITEM ON LUNCH/BREAKFAST MENU

   For students who would like to get a “grab and go” snack from the kitchen rather than bring a snack from home – an item is listed each day on the bi-weekly menu attached to this newsletter.  The cost is $1.00.  Your child should take their dollar, go to the window at the kitchen and pick up their snack.

 

NO SCHOOL 18^TH/19^TH

   Remember – there is no school on Monday, January 18^th and Tuesday, January19^th.  The 18^th is Martin Luther King Day and the 19^th is a professional development day for staff.   Students will be back in school on Wednesday, January 20^th.

 

6^TH GRADE FUND RAISER – SNOWMOBILE RAFFLE

   The 6^th grade class is raffling off a Ski-doo 550 Freestyle snowmobile!  Tickets are $10.00 each.  1,000 tickets will hopefully be sold.  If enough tickets are not sold, a 50/50 drawing will be held.  The drawing will be held on Friday, Feb. 19^th at 9a.m. at Dover School (Morning Sing).  You do not need to be present to win.  Tickets will be available at the Winter Concert on Jan. 27^th.  If you need more information, please call Jeannie Marchese at 464-8911.

 

PRACTICE CRISIS DRILL TO BE HELD

   During the last half of January, we will be holding a practice crisis drill in the school.  It will involve a Natural Disaster (tornado) and what the students, teachers and staff should do if that should occur.  The teachers will de-brief with the students after the drill with the assistance of our school counselor, Michael Italia.  Please feel free to talk to your child about the upcoming drill if you think it necessary to prepare your child.

   Thank you to Santa’s Elf who left the very generous donation for the 5^th/6^th luncheon.  Everyone enjoyed lunch and each child that had signed up for hot lunch was able to have a credit that day!

 

BRIDGET GARDNER’S DENTAL PROGRAM

   Once again, this year’s dental health program with Bridget Gardner will be held at Dover School.  The cost to parents this year is $12.00.  (The total is $24.00; however, half of the cost will be paid by the DVHC Volunteers.)  If you need full assistance, they will also provide that for parents who cannot afford the $12.00 cost.  Please complete the attached form and send it back to school by January 22^nd.  Checks should be made payable to Bridget Gardner.

 

STORY TIME/FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT AT DOVER FREE LIBRARY

   Story time is conducted in 10 week sessions on Wednesday’s beginning at 10:30a.m.  The winter session will begin Wed., Jan. 13^th and continue through March 24^th.  They are free, open to the public and feature a different theme and craft activity each week.  For more information about children’s programs at the Dover Free Library, visit the library or check the website:  doverfreelibrary1913.org

   Family Movie Night at Dover Free Library will be held Friday, Jan. 29^th at 6:30p.m.  Showing this month on the big screen is MGM’s digitally mastered Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, starring Dick Van Dyke as an eccentric inventor who creates an extraordinary car called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.  The car not only drives, but also flies and floats as it leads him, his two children and his beautiful lady friend into a magical world of pirates, castles and endless adventure.  Rated G for general audiences of all ages.  Admission is free and includes refreshments.  Questions: call the library at 348-7488.

 

YOUTH SERVICES HELPS COMMUNITY CELEBRATE ARTS ON MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY

   Individuals and groups of all ages from throughout the area are invited to attend Youth Services’ Community Celebration of the Arts at the River Garden in Brattleboro on January 18, from 12:30 – 4p.m. as either spectators or performers.  The event is open to the public.  This is organized by local AmeriCorps members; the afternoon will feature performers of every kind.  “If you are a speaker, band, spoken word artist, poet, dance troupe, choir or improv group, we want you to come and perform” explained Shambulia Gadsden Sams, AmeriCorps member at Youth Services, who added that there will also be Open Mic.    Attached to this newsletter is an article for parents listing helpful tips when your family goes skiing and/or snowboarding this season.  Know the “Your Responsibility Code” seven rules of the slopes.

HOLIDAY FEAST A SUCCESS!!

   We thank everyone for their food/money donations, their assistance serving, setting up, cleaning up, roasting a turkey and for joining us for lunch on Thursday, Dec. 17^th.  We had 172 students, parents, community members, friends, school employees and relatives for lunch!  We thank Mr. Davis and the chorus for their holiday songs – it was a wonderful event!  Thank you to Jim and John in the kitchen for their timely work having the food ready to serve!!  We look forward to next year!

BABYSITTER’S TRAINING CLASS HELD BY AMERICAN RED CROSS

   The American Red Cross will hold a Babysitter’s Training Class on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 from 9a.m. – 3p.m. at the Red Cross office at 81 High Street in Brattleboro.  Students 11-15 years old will get the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for infants and school-age children.  The course will also teach you how to be a good role model, make decisions, solve problems, and keep children safe, how to handle emergencies such as injuries, illnesses and household accidents, and how to write resumes and interview for jobs.  Call 802-254-2377 to sign up.  The course fee is $45.00.

 

REMINDER TO STUDENTS – SNEAKERS NEEDED!!

   We would like to remind students to bring sneakers to school so they don’t have to wear boots all day and to especially have them on Monday and Tuesdays on PE days.  If students have an extra pair they leave at school – that’s even better!!

 

WINTER SPORTS PROGRAM READY TO GO

   All students who signed up for ice skating will be able to go.  We have 10 students who have signed up – using the new form.  If you have not sent in the new form with plans for your child/children, you need to do so.  Please be certain to send in the $20.00 needed to participate in that sport.  Those who have not signed up for anything, nor said they are being picked up, need to let us know Monday, Jan. 4^th what your plans are.  The dates for the winter sports afternoons are:  Jan. 7,14,21,28, Feb. 4 and 18.  The busses will leave Dover School at noon to take students to the Hermitage to ice skate and to the Mountain for ski/boarding.  If you plan to pick your child up after the event – at school, the Hermitage or the Mountain – please send a letter to school.  You must let the person in charge of each event know when you actually take your child/children.  We need to know where every child is at all times.

 

7^TH GRADE INFORMATION NIGHT

   Remember – on Wednesday evening January 6, 2010 from 6 – 7:30p.m., various schools will be at Dover School with their presentations so parents and students may have this information prior to choosing a middle school.

WINTER SPORTS PAPERWORK

   Rob Hubert will be here today, Tuesday, Nov. 24^th, from 5:15 – 6:15p.m. for winter sports sign ups. This is your only time to sign up!!   Also, we are still looking for volunteers to handle the in-school program for the students who do not ski/board.  Call he school if this is something you may be interested in doing.

 

UNICEF NEWS

   Mrs. Neuman’s class would like to thank everyone for trick or treating for UNICEF, and supporting the in-school events to help raise funds.  They raised a total of $711.28!  Now children in poor countries can have water, food and medicines they need for survival.

 

HOLIDAY LUNCHEON INFORMATION ATTACHED

   Mark your calendars!  We have planned to hold the annual Holiday Luncheon on Thursday, December 17^th at noon.  We had to cancel last year due to the ice storm.  Attached is a list of items we would like to have donated.  Please call the school office 464-5386 if you can assist us in any way.  We thank you in advance for your donations!!  We also need servers – we have one volunteer to date.  We should have about 9 more.  Also, please come join us for lunch that day – it is free – and a great time to chat with neighbors, community members, students and staff.  Again, call the school at 464-5386 if you are planning to join us ASAP.

 

IMMUNIZATIONS WENT WELL

   The H1N1 and seasonal flu immunizations were held on Tuesday, Nov. 17^th.   The state will schedule a clinic here at school for the 2^nd dose of the H1N1 for children under 10 years of age who had the first dose Tuesday, once they complete their first dose clinics.  I will let you know when that will take place.

   There is a community H1N1 clinic on Monday, November 30^th from 12 – 3p.m. at the Second Congregational Church on Hillside St. in Bennington.  Target population is: pregnant women, household and caregiver contacts of children younger than 6 months of age, health care and emergency medical services personnel, persons from 6 months through 24 years of age and persons aged 25 – 64 who have medical conditions associated with a higher risk of influenza complications.  People who do not fit into one of the high risk priority groups will not be vaccinated.  This will be by appointment only to avoid waiting in long lines. PICTURE RE-TAKE DAY

   On December 2^nd beginning at 9a.m., Life Touch will be here to do picture re-takes.  You will need to send the pictures of your child/children back to school if they did not turn out well, prior to that date.  Those students who were absent when pictures were taken previously will have their pictures taken on this date as well – I have your envelopes/money here in the office.

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL INFORMATION NIGHT

   On December 9^th from 6 – 7:30p.m., Dover will sponsor an Information Night where various middle schools present their offerings to students.  This is a great time to gather information to assist you in choosing a middle school for your child/children.  Schools currently signed up to come are:  The Compass School, Charlemont Academy, The Mountain School, Brattleboro Area Middle School, Twin Valley Middle School and Leland and Gray Middle School.  We strongly urge parents and students of 5^th and 6^th graders to attend, and welcome parents and students from other classes as well.

   On Nov. 27 and Nov. 28 from 9 – 6p.m. and Nov. 29 from 12 to 5, there will be new books at half price.

This event will be held at the Food Co-op Plaza in Brattleboro and will benefit Windham County Reads.

 

EAST DOVER PARENTS – SAVE THE DATE

   Santa will visit the East Dover Fire House on Saturday, Dec. 12^th at 1p.m.  This event is for the East Dover community – mark your calendar!

ALERT NOW TEST….

   Dover School will hold one more Alert Now test on Wednesday, November 18^th.  We have changed a few numbers around – placing some of your numbers first instead of the second one called.  Also, If you have more than one student enrolled in Dover School, we noticed the report said “duplicate” so did not call it again.  These are the ones we switched around.  Hopefully, everyone will receive their call.  Let us know after the 18^th if you do not have a call/message on any of the exchanges you gave us on your health form!

 

COME TO OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL INFORMATION NIGHT

   Dover School will be hosting a middle school information night on December 9^th from 6:00 – 7:30p.m.  This is a great time to learn what various schools have to offer for middle school.  We strongly urge all 5^th and 6^th grade parents to attend, but parents of students from other grades are welcome as well.  Schools signed up to come so far are:  Compass School, Charlemont Academy, The Mountain School, Brattleboro Area Middle School, Twin Valley Middle School and Leland and Gray Middle School.

   If you cannot make this evening, Marlboro is holding a similar evening on Dec. 3^rd at 7p.m.  Marlboro welcomes Dover parents.  We have also extended an invitation to Marlboro parents to our event.

 

HUNTERS BREAKFAST

   On November 14^th, the Dover School 6^th grade will be hosting a Hunters Breakfast at the Dover Town Hall from 5:30a.m. – 10:00a.m.  Come have a nice hot breakfast and enjoy the company of others!

 

FEED THE THOUSANDS PROJECT

   This year, Dover School will be teaming up with other schools in the district to participate in “Project Feed the Thousands.”  Starting now until Thanksgiving, the Student Council is asking everyone in the school to bring in canned food to donate to the Deerfield Valley and the Townshend food pantry. We will also weigh the food to see what our total is. Thank you!

 

CADET BAND NEWS

   Mr. McKinney would like to inform cadet band members that rehearsals will begin for your group on Wednesday, Nov. 18^th at Townshend Elementary School.  Students will practice upstairs in the cafeteria/gym from 3:15 – 4:15p.m.  Students and parents are encouraged to carpool.  Please pick your child up promptly at 4:15p.m.  There will be additional rehearsals on Dec. 2^nd, 9^th and 16^th.  (Don’t forget to send a note to school indicating that your child is leaving school early to attend.)

   Students should wear black pants/white shirts for the concert, which is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 17^th at the Leland and Gray High School.  The concert begins at 7p.m.

DOVER FREE LIBRARY NEWS

   On Friday, Nov. 20^th beginning at 6:30p.m., Dover Free Library will sponsor a family movie night double feature.  Old Yeller and Savage Same (The Old Yeller Sequel).   Both movies are rated G, and run for 84 minutes and 104 minutes consecutively.  Refreshments and door prizes!  This event is free.  Call 348-7488 if you have any questions.

   There will be no preschool story time on Wednesday, Nov. 25^th.  Story time will resume on Wednesday Dec. 2^nd at 10:30a.m.

 

THANKSGIVING BREAK

   There is no school on November 25^th, 26^th and 27^th – Thanksgiving break.  If you are purchasing a turkey for your Thanksgiving dinner, and would like to purchase an extra one, we are planning to hold our Holiday Luncheon at Dover School on December 17^th at noon.  We need at least five 20lb. turkeys.  Let us know if you would like to donate one (we have freezer space!) for our luncheon - and if you would like to roast one on the 17^th and have it here around 11a.m.  We have volunteers to do the roasting if you donate the turkey!!  More information will come later regarding the luncheon. (We have some of the paper items from last year that were donated, but stored because we had to cancel the event.)  A list of items needed will come home at a later date.

 

WINTER SPORTS INFO ATTACHED

   Rob Hubert has the Winter Sports Program at Mount Snow lined up!  Please see the attached notice and form.  Tuesday, 11/24 from 5:15 – 6:15p.m. in the only time for sign ups!

   We will also need two volunteers to be in charge of the program here at school for the students who do not ski/board at Mount Snow.  This program can be snow-shoeing – starting from school, we have the snow-shoes.  It can be other outdoor activities, or inside activities.  In the past we have had arts/crafts, cooking, snow-shoeing, snow sculpture and games.  If this is something you are interested in doing, please contact the school as soon as possible.  This program will begin when the bus leaves for Mount Snow with the skiers/boarders (around noon) and end at approx. 3:10p.m.  You would need to be at Dover School at 11:55a.m. until 3:10, when students board the bus.   Please be certain the program planned fills that time space.  It would be to your benefit to have several assistants, as the age group varies from kindergarten through grade 6.  If there are supplies you need and each student needs to pay a “fee”, let us know so we can send a notice home as soon as possible.

   The menu and pre-pay envelope is attached to this newsletter.  Please complete the envelope and send it back to school by Wednesday, Nov. 4^th.  Remember – ham and cheese (h/c) or turkey and cheese (t/c) may be substituted in place of the main item. (As well as the usual p/b/j).

  

ALERT NOW TEST

   We only heard from one family that they did not receive the Alert Now test on Tuesday.  We are assuming everyone else received the call.  This test run assures us that the system is working properly.  We will check to see why the one call did not take place.  Thanks!

 

HALLOWEEN TAILGATE PARTY

   On Friday (tonight) – the annual Halloween Tailgate Party will take place at 6p.m. at the Dover Town Hall Parking lot.  This will be outside if weather permits.  This event is sponsored by the Dover School Club.  See you there!

 

A DOVER VOICE

   The Valley Youth Sports Board invites any interested community member to become a liaison for the town at the monthly board meetings.  This person would be able to share their perspective to help the board continue to meet the needs of our youth.  If interested please contact Jessica Rizio at 464-3694.  The next meeting is November 9^th at 6p.m. at TVHS.

 

DEERFIELD VALLEY ROTARY WINTER SPORTS SALE IS MOVING

   Nov. 7^th the Deerfield Valley Rotary Club will sponsor a Winter Sports and Tag Sale at the Deerfield Valley Elementary School on Rte. 100 in Wilmington, Vt.  While the Twin Valley High School gym gets a new floor, the ski and skate sale will move down the road to the Deerfield Valley Elementary School, offering all of the same deals on winter clothing and sporting equipment.

   Attendees will find all types of winter sporting gear like new and used skis, boots, poles, skates, snowshoes, parkas and winter clothing.  New this year is the addition of a tag sale.  The sale will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9a.m. – 3p.m.  Winter sporting equipment and clothing can be dropped off on Friday, Nov. 6^th from 4 – 7 p.m.  The Winter Sports Sale is a consignment sale.  Of the proceeds, 30% will go to the Rotary Fund and 70% will go to the seller.

FREE ADMISSION!  ALL INVITED….

   Journey East parents, students and friends cordially invite you to a great breakfast at the Jamaica Village School on Sunday, Nov. 1^st from 8 – 11a.m. to raise money for the Maple Scholarship for Art Education.  The funds raised will be used to assist students from the Arts College of Inner Mongolia University who are “excellent in character and in scholarship, and to those who are in financial need.”  The aim of this unique scholarship program is to encourage students to study hard, develop their talents, and to promote ethnic Mongolian arts.”  Over 40 Chinese/Mongolian students have been recipients of these scholarships since the program was initiated in 2004.   WCSU students and teachers will have the opportunity to enjoy performances of the whole delegation on Oct. 29 at 12:30 and/or at 7:30 on Oct. 30^th.  Come to the breakfast on the 1^st, where you can listen to/watch and interact with our foreign guests in a more intimate atmosphere.

APPLE PIE AND BAKE SALE

   On Saturday, Oct. 10^th from 9a.m. until sold out, the West Dover Congregational Church will hold an Apple Pie and Bake Sale.  Yummy!!  Plan to stop by and purchase a goodie and support the church!

 

PRICE CHOPPER “TOOLS FOR SCHOOLS” PROGRAM

   Dover has been enrolled in the “Tools for Schools” program at Price Chopper for the past 3 years.  Parents need to register in order to participate.  You may do this on line at www.pricechopper.com and click on the Consumers link in the Tools for Schools section.  I have enclosed a hard copy if you cannot register on line.  Points are used at the end of the program to purchase school items.

 

“TOUCH A TRUCK”

   On Saturday, Oct. 3^rd from 9a.m. – noon, rain or shine, there will be trucks to be explored at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.  A fire engine, dump truck, crane, tractor, etc. will be there!  Free toy truck for the first 200 kids!  This program is hosted by Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, and benefit of Cornerstone Pediatrics and Just So Pediatrics.  Cost:  $5.00 for ages 2 – 14; everyone else by donation.  $15.00 max for families with more than 3 children.  For more information, call 257-8314.  You may purchase tickets online at: www.bmhvt.org or at the event on Oct. 3^rd.

 

SO YOU MAY PLAN AHEAD

• Dover School Open House – Tuesday, Oct. 6^th, 6- 7:30p.m.

-          Pre-K  parents can look at the latest art work (like the insect mural), read some of their recent books, take a closer look at your child’s journal and let the students show you favorite choice time centers.  Mrs. Dix will also have a special game set up as well!

-          Kindergarten students will take their parents around the classroom teaching them how their day works as well as what they do and learn.  Welcome to the Kindergarten Open House Treasure Hunt!

-          First grade parents will freely look around the room guided by their child, see their child’s desk and school work; visit the animal tanks; look at the insect reports on display in the hall; check out the goals board with child’s picture; meet the teacher and ask any general questions.  This will be a relaxed time of approx. 15 – 20 minutes, with no specific presentations.

-          Grade 2 students will have a personal essay displayed entitled “It’s Great to Be Me” along- side items depicting what they are good at, what makes them happy and something they enjoy doing.  This is an extension of a project they did in Health class with Mrs. Johnson.  Fall poems they wrote will be on display as well.  Parents will be able to look through the students daily workbooks, read their writing journals and browse around the classroom.

-          Grade 3 will have a display of their fall poems, scarecrows and art work - pencil designs for you to see.  Students will share their summer stories.  They will gather some data for probability and statistics.  Who am I?  Using clues and pictures!

-          Grade 4/5:  Learn about the Iroquois “longhouse” and the Algonquin “wigwam”.  You can also see scale models of these Native American dwellings under construction as well as handcrafted wampum.  This will be presented by the fourth grade social studies class.

-          Grade 5/6 will display work in progress:  Ancient Mesopotamia projects, skateboard projects, student writing and math journals.

-          PE/Health:  There will be the ribbon cutting for our new Climbing Wall!  In Health, Mrs. Johnson has been working on Self Esteem and will have projects on display.  In PE there will be available information on the Fitness Testing as well as the year’s scope and sequence.

• Seasonal flu shots for staff/students will be held in mid-October – more info to come.

SILENT AUCTION

   The Dover School 6^th grade will hold a Silent Auction at the open house on October 6^th.  Some of the items available will be:  dinner for 2 at the Hermitage, dinner for 2 at the Roadhouse, Mountain Styles gift certificate, 1 cord of wood, Down in the Valley gift certificate, Shaw’s gift certificate, Portrait by Sarah Shippee, books from Bartleby’s Books, aroma therapy candle, basket with wine, corn maze at Adams Farm, Rite Aid gift certificate and much, much more.  Join in the fun!!

 

STUDENT PICTURES USED IN DEERFIELD VALLEY NEWS/BRATTLEBORO REFORMER

   At times, Dover School has news articles which include pictures of our students that we would like to publish in the Deerfield Valley News and/or the Brattleboro Reformer.  Please notify the school in writing by Wednesday Oct. 7, 2009, if you do not wish to have your child’s picture published in these papers.

 

COAT FROM SLOPES COAT DRIVE/SKI SALE FUND RAISER

   Coast from Slopes is a Vermont based non-profit that distributes coats for those in need throughout Vermont.   Please bring any clean coat or jacket to their Coat Drive Ski Sale on October 8 – 12.  The hours are 9a.m. – 6p.m. Thursday through Sunday, and 9a.m. – 3p.m. on Monday.  This event will be in Jamaica, Vermont across from the Jamaica Community Church under the tent.

   There will be new and used adult and children’s ski equipment up to 75% off with famous brands like Rossignol, Atomic, Salomon, Head and more.  Great deals on socks, goggles, gloves and more!  Experts will be on hand for boot fitting and great technical advice.  Used ski boots start at $39.00 and used skis with bindings start at $89.00.

   Each person donating a coat will receive $10.00 off on any ski or ski boot purchase.  This offer is limited one per each purchase from Oct. 8-12 only.

 

JOIN THE BRATTLEBORO FIGURE SKATING CLUB

   Open registration will take place Saturday, Oct. 10^th from 9a.m. to 12 noon at the Nelson Withington Rink.  If you cannot make this date, call for registration materials 603-256-6625 or 365-7968.  Classes are available for all skill levels – beginners through freestyle.   Small group lessons by certified coaches, open free skate time and options for private lessons available.  The weekly schedule is:

BREAKFAST-LUNCH MENU/ENVELOPE ATTACHED

   The menu for weeks 10-12-2009 and 10-19-2009 is attached.  Please complete the envelope and send it back to school by Wednesday, October 7^th.  Jim is offering some options to the daily lunch menu.  Students may order peanut butter & jelly (PBJ); turkey and cheese (T/C); ham and cheese (H/C); or vegetable roll-up (V/R).  The letters after each choice is what you should place in the lunch space on your child’s envelope.  These choices will be served with carrots or celery, ranch dressing, Sun Chips and dessert.  Students must sign up in advance for these options.   If you sign your child up for lunch and/or breakfast, please be certain they plan to actually take it.  We have had several students down for breakfast or lunch, but they do not take it.  Jim, our chef, prepares the number of meals according to the number of students signed up.  To avoid waste, we would like to have an accurate count.

 

OUTDOOR RECESS….

   Please be certain your child/children are dressed for cold weather!  All classes have outdoor recess either prior to lunch or after lunch.  It is coooooooooold on top of this mountain!

BREAKFAST/LUNCH MENU AND ENVELOPE ATTACHED

   This menu is for the weeks Sept. 28^th and Oct. 5^th.  The envelope, with payment, is due back to school by Wednesday, September 23^rd.  

   We are not receiving some of our meal envelopes back to school on time.  These envelopes determine how many breakfasts/lunches are prepared for the students.  If we have students go to breakfast and lunch that have not signed up, we run short.  The “count” goes to the kitchen each morning indicating how many breakfasts and how many lunches to prepare.  To avoid waste, we do not make extra meals.  If your child’s envelope is not back in time, they are taking someone’s lunch/breakfast that did sign up. Please send your envelope back by the due date listed in this newsletter and on the menu itself.

 

CHANGE THE DATE ON YOUR CALENDAR

   The Open House at Dover School will be held on Tuesday, October 6^th from 6 – 7:30p.m.  It was listed in the last newsletter as a different date.  Please change the date on your calendar and come join us!

FUND RAISER FOR STUDENT COUNCIL

   The Student Council will be having its first fundraiser, a bagel sale, on Friday, Sept. 25^th at Morning Sing.  Bagels and cream cheese will be $1.00.  Please come and support the Student Council!

 

HARLEM SUPERSTARS

  On Thursday, Oct. 8^th, at 6:30p.m. in the Leland and Gray High School Gym, the Harlem Superstars take on the Rusty Rebels, featuring… Patty Brissette, Tammy Claussen, Sikinder Rashid, Paul Paytas, Evan Chadwick, Mike Fontaine, Keith Lyman, Chris Barton, Art Monette, Dr. Moss Linder, Dr. Robert Backus, Joyce VanPamelen and more….  The Superstars are a group of the best basketball comedians in the world featuring Kevin “Showboat” Jackson, the “King of Basketball Comedy.”  Also playing for the Superstars is Jason Gibbons better known as “White Shadow.”  Tickets may be purchased in advance at the L & G office or call Sandy at 365-9382 or Betsy at 874-4635: children/students cost $8.00, adults $10.00 in advance.  Tickets at the door cost: children/students $10.00; adults $12.00.

   This event is sponsored by the L&G Booster Club to help support the school athletic program.  50/50 raffle tickets will also be on sale that night. 

 

LABEL YOUR CHILDREN’S CLOTHING

   Please place your child’s name or initials on the inside labels of their jackets, sweatshirts, boots, etc. so when these items “wander off”, we may get them back to their rightful owner.

   Attached to this newsletter is the Parent/Student handbook for 2009 – 2010.  Keep this in a handy place so you may have it for further reference.

   For our new families to Dover – if school is cancelled at any time, you will receive an automated phone message informing you.  The message will be Mr. Anton’s voice – but it will be a recorded message.  If you have an answering machine with a lengthy greeting, your call could be interrupted or you may not receive it.  For your convenience, the radio stations listing school closings are listed on page 1 of the handbook.  Notices are called in to the stations as early as possible.

A NOTE FROM MR. ANTON

   The school year is off to a great start.  All the hard work that the teachers and staff members put in over the summer made for a very smooth opening. I encourage all of you to attend Friday Morning Sing at 8:30a.m. as it is emblematic of what we try to deliver at Dover School:  community, learning and joy.  Also, please stop by the Cafegymatoriam to see the colorful rock wall.  On Thursday, October 8^th, we will be hosting an Open House.  We hope to see you here!

 

BREAKFAST/LUNCH MENU/ENVELOPES

   Attached to this newsletter is the next breakfast/lunch envelope.  We realize you just completed one for the first two weeks of school.  (If you did not complete the one that was in the packet which came home the first day of school, please do so immediately!)  We are carrying forward the debits and credits from last year to the attached envelope.  Please add the amount due or deduct the credit.  If you had a 6^th grader last year with a credit or debit, it will be reflected on the siblings envelope this year.

   There was a price increase this year for our program.  Some parents used the old price, some used the old price for just one week, etc.  If you completed your last envelope incorrectly, you will notice an amount due for the difference.

 

UPDATED IMMUNIZATIONS

   If your child/children had any immunizations during the summer, please notify the school.  Our school nurse is in the process of reviewing records.  You will be notified if your child/children need any immunizations.  It is important to get these immediately when notified.  State law prohibits students being in school without proper immunizations.

 

NEWS FROM MR. McKINNEY- INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC TEACHER

   The band program in the elementary schools is up and running!  The concert schedule is nearly complete.  They are as follows:

·         Winter Concert: Thursday, Dec. 17^th at 7p.m. in the Leland and Gray gym

·         Spring Concert:  Wednesday, May 12^th at 7p.m. in the Leland and Gray gym

·         Pops Concert:  Thursday, June 3^rd at 12:30p.m. in the Leland and Gray gym

·         District Band (5^th and 6^th graders) ad Jazz Band begin rehearsals on Monday, Sept. 21^st from 3 to 4:15p.m. at the Townshend Elementary School.

·         Instrumental rental night – pickup night is Monday, Sept. 21^st at 6:30p.m. in the Leland and Gray music room (lower level)

·         Cadet Band (4^th graders) rehearsals begin on Wednesday, Nov. 18^th from 3 to 4:15p.m. at the

DOVER FREE LIBRARY NEWS

   Preschool story time at the Dover Free Library will be taking a 3 week recess.  The Fall/Winter story time session will begin Wednesday, September 23^rd and continue through Dec. 23^rd (except for Wed., Nov. 25^th).  Visit the library for a complete schedule of programs or check out the website: doverfreelibrary1913.org.  Additional information can be obtained by calling the Dover Free Library at 348-7488.

 

 

MOUNT SNOW COMPLIMENTARY SEASON PASS

   Attached to the newsletter is information for students in Kindergarten through sixth grade from Mount Snow.  Parents should complete the forms attached and mail them to the Seasons Pass office with a wallet size photo or e-mail a photo to seasonpassphotos@mountsnow.com  No photos on file will be used.  Once all information is received, they will mail the season pass to the student.  Mount Snow will not be processing passes on site unless the student has never had a seasons pass or the child is a new student at the school.  Remember- do not send the information back to Dover School.

 

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES

   Don’t miss the bargains at the Mommy’s Marketplace, an indoor flea market in Wardsboro.    The annual Dover School Spring Concert will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2009.  Students should plan on arriving around 6:20p.m. for the 6:30p.m. concert.  They should report to their classrooms.

 

“NIGHT OF MAGIC” FOR ALL TO ENJOY

   A “Night of Magic” at the West Dover Inn on Saturday evening May 16^th from 5 – 9p.m.  This is a magic show for all to enjoy.  There will also be live music and a raffle for 2 Red Sox tickets.  What a great family outing!  All proceeds will go toward the Little League backstop.  Come join the fun!  Thank you to Mary Beth McGovern for her dedication to the Little League – she has done a fantastic job raising funds for the backstop – which was installed Wednesday!

LUNCH MENU/ENVELOPES

   Please be prompt in returning your child’s/children’s lunch envelope.  It’s difficult to “estimate” the number of breakfasts/lunches.  We are trying not to waste food, but unfortunately, when envelopes are not in and we estimate numbers, meals have been wasted.  Also, if your child signs up for lunch and/or breakfast, it is important that they actually take it.  We have prepared breakfasts/lunches for students signed up, and at times, they do not take it.  Jim prepares each tray – some days, many lunches are discarded!  What a shame to waste the food – and that adds to our daily cost as well.  Go over the lunch menu with your child/children and have them sign up for only the ones they wish to have. 

 

IMMUNIZATIONS

   If your child has had any immunizations during the school year, please let us know so we may mark their health records.  Also remember, if you have a child going into kindergarten or 7^th grade, check with their doctor to see if they are “up to date”.

 

EVENTS IN JUNE

   So you may plan ahead, 6^th grade graduation will be held June 12^th at 6:30p.m. at the Dover Town Hall.  The last day of school at Dover is Monday, June 15^th.  All students will be released at noon.  Lunch will be served prior to dismissal.

 

 

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR 2009-2010

   The first day of school for 2009 -2010 at Dover will be August 31^st for students.  Others may be starting earlier than this – our school board voted to begin on this day.

 

DOVER FREE LIBRARY NEWS

   Preschool story time at the Dover Free Library is conducted every Wednesday of the month beginning at 10:30a.m.  The spring session will continue now through June 17^th.  Story times are free, open to the public, and feature a different theme and craft activity each day.  For more information about children’s programs at the Dover Free Library, visit the library, check out the website: doverfreelibrary1913.org or call the librarian 348-7488.

 

ATTIC/SOUP/BAKE SALE

TALENT SHOW

   The annual Dover School Talent Show will be held on Thursday, April 16^th at 8:30a.m. and in the evening at 6:30p.m.  The Student Council will be sponsoring a bake sale on that day.  In the a.m. there will be bagels and cream cheese! 

 

PARENTS OF ESAP WRITERS

   The last day for ESAP writing will be Wednesday, April 29^th, NOT Monday, April 27^th.

 

SPRING PICTURES

   Spring pictures for students will be Thursday, April 16^th in the a.m.  If you haven’t sent your form in indicating which background you would like, please do so on Monday.  All pictures will be taken, you preview them and either purchase them or send them back to school.  No money is paid prior to taking them.

 

SCHOOL REPORT NIGHT

   On May 4^th from 6:30p.m. – 7:00p.m., School Report Night will be held.  The regular scheduled board meeting will follow at 7p.m.

 

SPIRIT DAY AT DOVER SCHOOL

   The Dover School Student Council would like to announce that they are declaring Friday, April 17^th as “Wear Your Clothes Backwards” day!  They are hoping that all students join in the fun!

 

CADET BAND

   The Cadet Band will meet to practice for the Spring Concert on Wednesday, April 15^th from 3 – 4:15p.m. at the Townshend Elementary School.  The Spring Concert will be held Wednesday, May 13^th at the Leland and Gray High School gymnasium at 7p.m.  This is the date for the Cadet, District and Jazz bands.  Black slacks/white shirts are required for students performing in the concert.

 

LOST AND FOUND

   Please stop by and check the lost and found when you are in the school.  Much has accumulated!  We will also try to have a table set up during Friday Morning Sing so you can check it as well.

READING CHALLENGE NEWS

   Mrs. Abarno would like to thank all students, parents and educators who successfully completed the 21^st March Reading Challenge.  Class and school prizes donated by Windham County Reads and the Dover School Club were given out at an assembly on Tuesday, March 8^th.  This year our parent involvement doubled!

   The Student Council sells various items to raise funds for their various projects.  They sell these items “room to room” on a cart on Tuesday and Thursdays from 8 – 9a.m.  Items available are: pencil cases $2.50; pencils $.50; erasers $.75; grips $.75; cap erasers $.15; cheese $.50; pretzel rods 2/$.25; sharpeners $.75 and note pads $.75.

 

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

   We have received the final calendar for the school year 2009 – 2010.  We will send one home later on once we have “Dover-ized” it, but so you can mark your calendar – school for Dover will begin Monday, August 31^st for students.  It was scheduled to begin August 26^th, but at the school board meeting Monday evening, April 6^th, it was voted to begin August 31^st.  We will have 4 snow days built in the calendar next year instead of 5. 

  

APRIL BREAK

   There will be no school the week of April 20^th – spring break.  We will be back in school on Monday, April 27^th.  Let’s hope for sunshine and warmer days!!

 

SOFTBALL NEWS FROM DEB PARSONS

   If any 4^th, 5^th or 6^th grade girls and/or their families are interested in getting together on Sunday afternoons for softball during May and June (per the notice sent home several weeks ago) please call Deb Parsons at 464-0702 before next week and let her know.  If not enough interest, the Youth Valley Softball team is looking for a couple more players and Stephanie may be signing up with them.

MENU AND LUNCH ENVELOPE ATTACHED

  The menu and pre-pay lunch envelope are attached to this newsletter.  Please send the envelope back to school with payment by Wednesday, April 1, 2009.  This last envelope was very late from many parents.  This creates a shortage of breakfast/lunches prepared.  PLEASE SEND THEM BACK BY THE DEADLINE.   

   We also are asking parents of children who qualify for free lunch to please complete the envelopes and send them back to school so we have an accurate count at meal time.  Today at lunch, there were 6 meals that went to waste.  We did the lunch count this morning and also counted some students who qualify for free lunch who do not have their envelopes in, so actually are not signed up.  They have been having lunch some days this week, so we have been “guessing” when we think they may eat.  We did not want to be “short” lunches, which has happened in the past.  Unfortunately, today they did not take the lunch.  Because our lunch/breakfast program is supposed to be “self sufficient”, we cannot afford to have waste.  Restaurants make lunches up as they are ordered.  Schools make the amount of food up according to the count given the kitchen in the morning.  We must INSIST these envelopes come in.  We cannot automatically say no to the students who are not signed up and do not come to school without a lunch.  All students should have something for lunch in order to handle their academics in the afternoon.  PLEASE, be certain to complete and send the envelopes in. 

 

RAFFLE ITEMS NEEDED

   The Dover Little League is trying to raise money for a backstop which was recently vandalized and rendered useless.  There will be a raffle on Memorial Day weekend at the 7-11 in West Dover to raise funds.  Items for the raffle are needed.  If you know of someone who would like to donate items for this raffle, or if you yourself have an item, it can be dropped off at school or you may contact Mary Beth McGovern at 464-7483.  Cash (check) donations are also being accepted and can be dropped off at school or sent to Mary Beth McGovern at P. O. Box 1097, W. Dover, Vt. 05356.  We thank everyone for their support!  There aren’t many events for our students to get involved in – Little League is a nice healthy sport, and we want to keep our equipment and field in order for the safety of our children.

 

PROPER CLOTHES FOR SCHOOL

   It’s that time of year – some days are warm and students are beginning to wear shorts to school.  We need to remind parents that if your child/children wear shorts to school – they need to be an appropriate length – no short shorts.  Once warmer weather is here, we just want to remind you that “spaghetti straps”, short shirts with bare midriffs, and t-shirts with inappropriate wording/pictures are not allowed.  We thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

 

WHEN YOU CHILD WILL BE ABSENT FROM SCHOOL

   As is mentioned in our parent/student handbook, please call the school when your child/children will be absent due to an illness, etc. 

 

BASEBALL SOON TO BEGIN

   Again, just a reminder that baseball will soon begin.  Students are not allowed to wear their cleats in school during the day.  They should bring their cleats to school and change into them prior to heading to the ball field.   Baseball registration forms are due, with money, March 31^st. 

 

SCHOOL PICTURES

   Spring pictures will be taken on April 16^th.  Packets will be sent home closer to that date.

 

TALENT SHOW

   This year’s talent show will be held Thursday, April 16^th in place of Friday’s morning sing.  There will also be a show at 6:30p.m. April 16^th.

 

CAMP FAIR TO BE HELD

   Youth Services wants to help make summer a fun time for parents and kids!  There will be a Camp Fair at the River Garden in Brattleboro on Saturday, April 11^th from 1 – 3p.m.  On that day you will be able to get information about or register for many camps that are available for kids.  If you are looking for summer events for your child/children, please attend!

 

APRIL BREAK

   To correct the error in last week’s newsletter – April break is the week of April 20^th.   Hope you have some fun activities planned!

 

AUCTION ITEMS NEEDED

   The 41^st annual East Dover Volunteer Fire Dept. Auction will take place on July 25^th.  When doing your spring cleaning, etc. – if you have good saleable items that you would like to pass along, please call and donate them for this auction.  You may call 348-6600 or 348-9850.

PRINCIPAL HIRED FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR

   If you have not already heard, the board has hired Mr. Bill Anton as the Dover School principal beginning July 1, 2009.  We feel very fortunate to have Mr. Anton join us in this capacity and look forward to his strong leadership in moving Dover School forward.  Mrs. Susan Mach will be retiring and moving to Colorado to spend time with family.  Everyone wishes her well – she certainly deserves to “take it easy”, travel and spend time with her family and friends.  We all have enjoyed working with and for Susan – she will certainly be missed.  Good luck Susan in your new adventures, and welcome Bill, we look forward to you joining our team!

   Please review the attached menu with your child/children.  Send payment in the prepay envelope to school by Wednesday, March 18^th.  Remember – it is important to complete the envelope even if you qualify for free lunch.

   Last week’s newsletter mentioned that there was an attached lunch survey.  I bet you didn’t find one, did you?  You will find it attached to this newsletter.  Please complete it with your child/children and return it to school.  Thank you for your assistance!

 

NEWS FROM DOVER FREE LIBRARY  

   Preschool story time and Toddler Twenty at the Dover Free Library will take a 2 week recess.  The spring session will begin Wednesday, April 1^st and continue through May 27^th.  Please check our website at any time:  doverfreelibrary1913.org

   Family movie night will be held Friday, March 20^th at 6:30p.m.  Twilight starring Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen and Kristen Stewart as Isabella Swan will be showing on the big screen.  This is the story of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) who doesn’t expect much when she moves to the small town of Forks, Washington, until she meets the mysterious and handsome Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) – a teen who is hiding a dark secret – he’s a vampire.

   This film is rated PG-13.  Children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent.  Free admission, free popcorn.  Questions? Call the library at 348-7488.

 

PARENT SYMPOSIUM

   On March 23^rd from 6 – 8p.m., Windham Central Supervisory Union along with the Dept. of Education will be sponsoring a parent symposium for special needs students regarding Least Restrictive Environment.  This symposium is open to all parents of special needs students who attend school within WCSU.  There is no charge.  Light refreshments and daycare will be provided.  Location: WCSU office at 1219 Vt. COLD LUNCH FROM HOME

   Please be aware that lunches from home will not be “warmed up” for students at lunch time.  It just is not possible to do this. 

 

LUNCH MENU AND ENVELOPE ATTACHED

   Attached is the next lunch menu and envelopes.  Please send them back by Wednesday, Feb. 11^th.  They have not been returned promptly these past few weeks – which makes it very hard to determine how many lunches to make.  We do not want to resort to having all students who have not signed up go to the end of the line in case there are not enough lunches prepared.  We must have the envelopes back prior to lunches being served.

 

WE NEED YOUR ASSSISTANCE

   We are asking that you do not allow your child/children to wear pajama bottoms to school on winter sports days – nor any day of the week.  This is not appropriate school attire.

   We also ask that you do not send electronics to school with your child/children.  The school cannot be responsible for the protection of these items.

   Also, boots cannot be worn all day by students.  Please be certain they have sneakers or shoes to wear during the day.

   At the Monday evening board meeting, the Principal Search Committee was set up.  The committee is as follows:

DOVER FREE LIBRARY

   Mad Science of New England will be presenting ELECTRI-CITY on Tues. 2/24 at 6:30p.m.  Test various materials for conductivity with space age plasma.  Test your nerves as you play an electronic game.  Registration is required, space is limited.  Call or stop by the Library.

   Royal story time, Wed. 2-25, 10:30a.m. – come be treated like royalty at the library.  Listen to stories of princes and princesses, knights and dragons.  This is for children between the ages of 3-10.  Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.  Wear your most royal attire.

   Family Movie Night – Fri. 2-27, at 6:30p.m. -  Come aboard the good ship Hispaniola and set sail in search of buried treasure in one of Disney’s most critically acclaimed adventure classic – Treasure Island.  This is rated PG and will be shown in the Community Room on the big screen.  It runs for 96 minutes.  Door prizes and popcorn provided.

 

WIN LIFT TICKETS OR WINTER DEW TOUR SOUVENIR ITEMS

   There are many who doubt the value of the dollar today, but during the first 19 days of Feb., a dollar is all you will need to have a chance at a pair of Mount Snow lift tickets or a souvenir bag of items from Mount Snow’s Winter Dew Tour.  The Dover School sixth grade class will be raffling off two pairs of Mount Snow lift tickets during the school’s annual winter concert, Thursday, Feb. 19^th.  The lift vouchers are valid any day through the end of Mount Snow’s season, which is expected to go deep into the month of April.

   There will be three winners drawn at the end of the school concert.  The first two will each receive two vouchers, or if present, the option to claim an official OGIO Winter Dew Tour Logo including a Nike 6.0 official Winter Dew Tour logo black beanie, a bright yellow Dew Tour beanie given to volunteers, a black Winter Dew Tour bandanna, and the black Carinthiaparks  glass.  The students have also decided to donate a JBL on stage micro portable dock for iPOD.

   Raffle tickets can be purchased during the school concert between 6:30 – 7:30p.m. on Feb. 19^th for only one dollar each.  All proceeds will benefit the sixth grade class trip to Niagara Falls in June.  Advance raffle tickets will be available from the sixth graders in school at 8a.m. or at 7p.m. at Mountain Park Cinema.  Checks with your phone number on them may be made out to Dover School 6^th Grade and mailed to Dover School, 9 Schoolhouse Road, E. WIN TUBING, PIZZA AND A MOVIE

   Win tubing, pizza and a movie for up to 13 of your friends!  If you think you have that many friends, or maybe co-workers that you want to have as friends, then you are going to want to enter for your chance to win the ultimate mountain party package.  Mount Snow, Mountain Park Cinema and Tony’s Pizza have teamed up to offer your team a fun Friday evening out – perfect for any age.  The Dover School sixth grade class will announce the winner after lunch at Dover Town Meeting on Tuesday, March 3^rd.  It could be you!

   The lucky winner will be notified to put the work out to 13 friends, family, co-workers, classmates, teammates or whomever you choose to join you for a special invite on Friday, March 20^th.  This Friday evening is reserved for you and your posse to have a blast at the 4:30p.m. Mount Snow tubing session, pizza donated by Tony’s Pizza at Mount Snow, followed by a movie, courtesy of Mountain Park Cinemas.  Up to 14 tickets are already reserved for the winner and all you have to do is make a donation to the Dover School 6^th Grade for their class trip.

   Only $5. For a chance to enjoy a cool afternoon with friends or a close evening with a special someone.  If you are not the gambling type, a $10. Donation to the class trip will get you 10 chances.  Now that’s a stimulus package.

VACATION DAY CAMP 2009

   Explore, imagine, investigate and have fun during Feb. school vacation.  Bonnyvale Environmental Ed. Ctr. is offering our annual Winter Adventures Vacation Day Camp for children in grades 2-4.  Adventure into the wintertime forest, exploring animal tracks and sign, building shelters and fires, fashioning fairy homes, creating edible wildlife art and learning more about the creatures around us.  Join for one day or all four.  The themes of each day will be explored through outdoor excursions, hands-on activities, games, nature crafts, stories and songs.  Camp will be held at BEEC on Bonnyvale Rd. in W. WINTER WONDERLAND FAMILY SLEDDING PARTY

   Grace Cottage Hospital will be holding a winter wonderland family sledding party on Saturday, Feb. 7^th from 1 – 3p.m. at the Townshend Dam Recreation Area.  Good exercise and lots of fun!  Some sleds will be available, but bring your own if you can.  But wait, there’s S’Mores! (and hot chocolate!)  All of this is free.  No need to RSVP – for more information call Karen at 365-3649.

 

ATTACHED – DEERFIELD VALLEY ROTARY CLUB TUBE-A-THON INFORMATION

   This is the 5^th year for this event.  It is a great chance for students, their friends and family to get on the Mount Snow Tubing Hill and enjoy the day, while raising money for their local school.  This event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 22dn at Mount Snow from 2-4:30p.m.  Students may arrive any time between 1:45 and 4p.m.  There will be a barbeque and prizes for the participants that have raised money.

   Pledge collection – they encourage students to collect pledges from friends and family members.  100% of the pledges collected will be returned to your designated school group.  Additional funds raised at the event will be used for the Rotary Scholarship fund to award scholarships to seniors in local high schools.

   Each child must read and complete the Express Assumption of Risks and Forum Selection Agreement form.

   Prizes are awarded as follows:  pledges $10. – 29.99 = Tubing and BBQ at Mount Snow;

$30. – 49.99 = free bowling ticket at North Star Bowl and all of the above; $50. – 74.99 = free movie ticket to Mountain Park Cinema and all of the above; $75. Plus = movie party for five at Mountain Park Cinema (one date) and all of the above.

 

MAKE-UP DAY FOR THE WINTER SPORTS PROGRAM 

   The make-up ski/board/enrichment day will be March 5th unless otherwise notified.  Mark your calendars!!  Students in the enrichment program (who have been going X-Country or Snowshoeing at Timber Creek) will be here at Dover School with Tom Harrison.  He plans to take students snowshoeing here on our property, so there is no additional charge.
