LUNCH MENU/ENVELOPES

Please be prompt in returning your child’s/children’s lunch envelope.  It’s difficult to “estimate” the number of breakfasts/lunches.  We are trying not to waste food, but unfortunately, when envelopes are not in and we estimate numbers, meals have been wasted.  Also, if your child signs up for lunch and/or breakfast, it is important that they actually take it.  We have prepared breakfasts/lunches for students signed up, and at times, they do not take it.  Jim prepares each tray – some days, many lunches are discarded!  What a shame to waste the food – and that adds to our daily cost as well.  Go over the lunch menu with your child/children and have them sign up for only the ones they wish to have.

IMMUNIZATIONS

If your child has had any immunizations during the school year, please let us know so we may mark their health records.  Also remember, if you have a child going into kindergarten or 7th grade, check with their doctor to see if they are “up to date”.

DOVER SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

MENU AND LUNCH ENVELOPE ATTACHED

The menu and pre-pay lunch envelope are attached to this newsletter.  Please send the envelope back to school with payment by Wednesday, April 1, 2009.  This last envelope was very late from many parents.  This creates a shortage of breakfast/lunches prepared.  PLEASE SEND THEM BACK BY THE DEADLINE.

We also are asking parents of children who qualify for free lunch to please complete the envelopes and send them back to school so we have an accurate count at meal time.  Today at lunch, there were 6 meals that went to waste.  We did the lunch count this morning and also counted some students who qualify for free lunch who do not have their envelopes in, so actually are not signed up.  They have been having lunch some days this week, so we have been “guessing” when we think they may eat.  We did not want to be “short” lunches, which has happened in the past.  Unfortunately, today they did not take the lunch.  Because our lunch/breakfast program is supposed to be “self sufficient”, we cannot afford to have waste.  Restaurants make lunches up as they are ordered.  Schools make the amount of food up according to the count given the kitchen in the morning.  We must INSIST these envelopes come in.  We cannot automatically say no to the students who are not signed up and do not come to school without a lunch.  All students should have something for lunch in order to handle their academics in the afternoon.  PLEASE, be certain to complete and send the envelopes in.

RAFFLE ITEMS NEEDED

The Dover Little League is trying to raise money for a backstop which was recently vandalized and rendered useless.  There will be a raffle on Memorial Day weekend at the 7-11 in West Dover to raise funds.  Items for the raffle are needed.  If you know of someone who would like to donate items for this raffle, or if you yourself have an item, it can be dropped off at school or you may contact Mary Beth McGovern at 464-7483.  Cash (check) donations are also being accepted and can be dropped off at school or sent to Mary Beth McGovern at P. O. Box 1097, W. Dover, Vt. 05356.  We thank everyone for their support!  There aren’t many events for our students to get involved in – Little League is a nice healthy sport, and we want to keep our equipment and field in order for the safety of our children.

PROPER CLOTHES FOR SCHOOL

It’s that time of year – some days are warm and students are beginning to wear shorts to school.  We need to remind parents that if your child/children wear shorts to school – they need to be an appropriate length – no short shorts.  Once warmer weather is here, we just want to remind you that “spaghetti straps”, short shirts with bare midriffs, and t-shirts with inappropriate wording/pictures are not allowed.  We thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

WHEN YOU CHILD WILL BE ABSENT FROM SCHOOL

As is mentioned in our parent/student handbook, please call the school when your child/children will be absent due to an illness, etc.

BASEBALL SOON TO BEGIN

Again, just a reminder that baseball will soon begin.  Students are not allowed to wear their cleats in school during the day.  They should bring their cleats to school and change into them prior to heading to the ball field.   Baseball registration forms are due, with money, March 31st.

SCHOOL PICTURES

Spring pictures will be taken on April 16th.  Packets will be sent home closer to that date.

TALENT SHOW

This year’s talent show will be held Thursday, April 16th in place of Friday’s morning sing.  There will also be a show at 6:30p.m. April 16th.

CAMP FAIR TO BE HELD

Youth Services wants to help make summer a fun time for parents and kids!  There will be a Camp Fair at the River Garden in Brattleboro on Saturday, April 11th from 1 – 3p.m.  On that day you will be able to get information about or register for many camps that are available for kids.  If you are looking for summer events for your child/children, please attend!

APRIL BREAK

To correct the error in last week’s newsletter – April break is the week of April 20th.   Hope you have some fun activities planned!

AUCTION ITEMS NEEDED

The 41st annual East Dover Volunteer Fire Dept. Auction will take place on July 25th.  When doing your spring cleaning, etc. – if you have good saleable items that you would like to pass along, please call and donate them for this auction.  You may call 348-6600 or 348-9850.

REMINDERS:

·         April 8th is a noon release day.  Lunch will be served prior to school being dismissed.

·         Lunch envelope with payment due by April 1st.

·         Spring school pictures will take place on April 16th.

COLD LUNCH FROM HOME

Please be aware that lunches from home will not be “warmed up” for students at lunch time.  It just is not possible to do this.

LUNCH MENU AND ENVELOPE ATTACHED

Attached is the next lunch menu and envelopes.  Please send them back by Wednesday, Feb. 11th.  They have not been returned promptly these past few weeks – which makes it very hard to determine how many lunches to make.  We do not want to resort to having all students who have not signed up go to the end of the line in case there are not enough lunches prepared.  We must have the envelopes back prior to lunches being served.

WE NEED YOUR ASSSISTANCE

We are asking that you do not allow your child/children to wear pajama bottoms to school on winter sports days – nor any day of the week.  This is not appropriate school attire.

Also, boots cannot be worn all day by students.  Please be certain they have sneakers or shoes to wear during the day.

Given enough time, we will begin to call your home if we have not heard from you and your child/children are not in school.  Lengthy absents, or if we are unable to reach you, will mean a visit from a truant officer, which is a member of the Dover Police Dept.

  1. No vehicles are allowed to come up in front of the school to drop off or pick up students.  Busses only are allowed in this area on school days.

THANK YOU!!!!

Our parking procedures seem to be going rather well lately!  Keep up the great work!

FOOD PANTRY DONATIONS

We will have a food donation box in the front office beginning Feb. 2nd.  For those of us who are fortunate to have our cupboards full – let’s all think about the families who are not as fortunate.  Donations of non-perishable foods may be dropped off anytime during school hours.  Your donations are greatly appreciated.

PARENT VOLUNTEER NEEDED TO BE ON COMMITTEE

The school board is in the process of setting up an interview committee for the hiring of a principal for Dover School to begin July 1, 2009.  As everyone knows, Mrs. Mach will be retiring and moving to Colorado this summer to spend more time with family.  We are very sad that she is leaving, but happy that she will be spending quality time with family – out of snowy, cold Vermont.  After almost 40 years in the field of education, her retirement is well deserved! We all wish Mrs. Mach the very best.

We need one (1) parent volunteer.  Please let us know in the office if this is something you are interested in doing.  If we have more than one volunteer, we will draw a name from “the hat”.  The committee will consist of 1 primary teacher, 1 intermediate teacher, 1 parent, 1 community member, 2 board members, 1 support staff, the administrative assistant and 1 school volunteer.

Dates are as follows:  first, all candidate applications will be screened by our Superintendent and Principal; Feb. 9th – committee will be chosen; 2/11 – interviews will take place; 3/2 the school board will interview; after the board interviews, some committee members will meet with board for discussion.

JANUARY THAW/CONTRA DANCE

“Wendy and the Lost Boys” with caller Andy Davis – come to a dance on Friday, Jan. 23rd at 7p.m. at the Marlboro Elementary School. There will be door prizes and refreshments.  Adults - $10.00, Children under 12 - $8.00, families $25.00. Tickets at the door.  50/50 raffle:  2nd prize – cord of wood, delivered locally; 3rd prize a new iPod 8 gig Nano; 4th prize 2 Mt. Snow lift tickets; 5th prize – family pass to Adams Petting Farm, and more!  Raffle tickets $10. or 3 for $25.00.  Available at the Marlboro school or by calling 254-2668.  You do not have to be present to win.

SPORTS, SPORTS, SPORTS

The Leland and Gray Booster Club would like to welcome parents/students and future parents/students to join the Booster Club.  This is a parent-run organization which raises money for the L & G sports programs through proceeds from the concession stand, advertising in the basketball program, sales of L & G Rebel clothing and other special fund-raising events.  The money is used to pay for banners, scoreboards, field equipment, scholarships to camps, sports equipment, as well as a variety of other needs.  Meetings are held the first Thursday of every month in the library at 6p.m.  Come give us your thoughts, ideas, comments, concerns or questions!  If you have any questions, please contact: Sandy Sherman, President 365-9382 or drmweavr@sover.net; Toni Dezendorf, V.President 365-4625 or ddesign@sover.ne; Holly Meyer – Asst. to V.P. 365-4670 or phmeyer@sover.net; Karen Ameden, Treas. 874-4974 or dkameden@svcable.net; or Marybeth Culver, Sec. 843-1088 or mculver@wnesu.net.

MENU/LUNCH ENVELOPES ATTACHED

The next lunch menu/envelopes are attached to this newsletter.  Please remember – do not deduct a credit unless it appears on your envelope.  We run behind on credits due to the week not completed when the newsletters are printed.

We are back on schedule sending these home.  We sent the last one out late due to various reasons.  We realize you just sent one in a short time ago, but this one is due Wednesday, Jan. 28th.  PLEASE BE PROMPT SENDING THEM BACK IN.  To avoid waste in the kitchen, Jim is fixing limited food as per the count given to him each morning.

DRESS WARMLY

On cold and windy days, it can be quite cool here in our school building.  Be certain students are dressed warmly.  When there is outdoor recess, students should have boots, hats, mittens and warm coats.  There will not be outdoor recess on days that are extremely cold.  When there is outdoor recess – all students are expected to go outside.

ENRICHMENT CHANGE

Please remember that the next three enrichment days will be with Mr. Harrison, and students will be snowshoeing and/or X-Country skiing at Timber Creek.  Dress accordingly.  Send in a note if you plan to pick your child up at Timber Creek.   Otherwise, they will go on the bus.  They will be picked up at Timber Creek via bus, ride to the Mountain and the skiers/boarders will board, then they will be delivered home.  Expect them home later on these days.  If you have the time, we could use a couple of assistants!

THANK YOU PARENTS

Thank you parents for sending in the “We Need Your Assistance” gold forms so we could complete our lists for Rob Hubert and Donna Ginieres.  Please remember – when you pick your child up from Mount Snow after the program – check out with Traci Alfonso prior to taking them!  They want to be certain every child is accounted for!!!

PICTURE RETAKE DAY SCHEDULED

If you need your child’s picture retaken, please return the pictures you have and write “retake” on the outside envelope.  On Tuesday, Nov. 25th we will have the photographer here to take students pictures who were absent last time as well as those who need it retaken.  If you need a retake, we must have the entire original package returned to school by Tuesday.

THANKSGIVING BREAK

We want to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving!  Remember, there is no school on Nov. 26, 27 and 28.  We will see you in December!!

SOCCER/BASEBALL UNIFORMS

If you have not returned your sports uniforms, please do so immediately.  You may return them to school and we will get them to the proper people, or you may return all soccer uniforms to Rob Hubert, A-Team baseball shirts to Jeff Fillion and B-Team baseball shirts to Vicki Capitani.

DANCE CLASS OFFER ATTACHED

Attached is paperwork from Mrs. Griswold for an after school program in dance.  If your child is interested, please complete the paperwork and send it back to the school office.  Thanks!

MENU/ENVELOPE ATTACHED

It is hard to believe this menu attached is for weeks in December!  Time certainly flies by!!  Please return the envelope with payment by Tuesday, November 25th.   It is important to get them in on time – our count for the breakfast and lunch program has been way off lately due to envelopes not in on time, and students getting lunch without being signed up.  At times, more lunches have to be made during lunch time, which delays serving.  Students might not receive what is on the menu in such cases due to not preparing correct amounts.

We must also inform you that since breakfast is only .75 cents –  students have a choice of items, but cannot have every item on the menu.  They always receive 1 serving of juice, and have a choice of cereal or the hot item.  Fruit, cheese and crackers are always available.

Just a reminder as well, that if your child does not like the main item at lunch, they may sign up for peanut butter and jelly, just peanut butter, or just jelly.  Just place a “PBJ”, “P”, or “J” in the box on the envelope on the day they prefer this type of sandwich.  These sandwiches need to be ordered ahead of time so they are ready and waiting for the student!  If students are down for the regular lunch, this is what will be served to them.  Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

HEAD LICE UP-DATE

Just a reminder - please continue to check your child’s head on a regular basis.  Also, please notify the school if you find “anything” – so we may keep on top of any issues here at school as well.

DRESS WARMLY

There is outside recess even on these cold and blustery days, so please be certain your children have proper outside clothing.  Be certain to mark your child’s initials or name on inside tags of their clothing (coats, boots, mittens, hats, etc.) so if something wanders off we can get it back to the owner.  Some students look very under dressed!

SENIOR MEALS

If you know of any seniors who would like to come to school for senior meals, we are planning the first one on Thursday, Dec. 11th at 11:45a.m.  The cost is $4.00, and they will be seated in the school library.  They should call the school prior to that date to sign up.  The menu will be the same as the students for Dec. 11th.

Other dates will be set if we have the interest.  Pass the word on!

PLANNING AHEAD

Once again, we will hold our annual Holiday Feast in December.  For our new families – this is a day when we have all food donated and everyone has lunch free of charge.  Our menu is turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, green beans, squash, cranberry relish, a variety of breads, a dessert table, coffee, tea, water and milk.  We plan to hold this event on Friday, Dec. 19th this year.  So if you are buying a turkey on sale now and would like to donate one for that day – let Helen Brown know.  We need 5 twenty pound turkey’s total, along with lots of other items.   A list is attached to today’s newsletter for items needed.  If you are willing to stuff and roast your turkey for us, that would be great as well, or if you prefer not to prepare it, we will find someone who could!  If you can purchase and donate any item on the list, please call the school at 464-5386 and we will mark that down.  It’s always a fun time with lots of family, friends and community members joining us.  Mark your calendar so you can join us as well!

BOOK SALE

New books at half price!   Nov. 28 and 29 from 9 – 6, and Nov. 30 from 12 – 5 at Latchis 4, Brattleboro.  This will benefit Windham County Reads!

PARKING LOT “RULES”

Attached to this newsletter is a sketch of our parking lot showing where you should park your car and where you should stop to drop off students.  The Drop Off Zone is only for you to use if you are letting a child/children out of your vehicle and continuing on your way.  The Parking  Area is where you should park if you plan to come into the building, get out of your car, or pick children up after school.

We had a close call with a student – cars were parked in the drop off zone, creating blind spots.  We insist on keeping our children safe, so are asking for your complete cooperation in following the rules.  These rules are to be followed throughout the entire school day – not just early in the morning and dismissal time.

We thought we would put this explanation and sketch in this week’s newsletter especially for our new families who may not know the complete rules, and as a reminder to our families who have been with us previous years.

Again, thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

THANK YOU FROM DOVER SCHOOL CLUB

A heartfelt thank you to Todd Darrah and Janet Picard for their generous coffee donation to the Dover School Club (and to the staff for the staff room).  It is greatly appreciated and enjoyed!

RESULTS OF DEERFIELD VALLEY FITNESS DAY

Congratulations to Dover’s participants –Amelia Nick, Chris Robinson, Samantha Cunningham-Darrah, Ben Smith, Emerson Smith, Colette Anton, Luke Douglas, Mary Sniatkowski, Mariah Powers, James McGovern, Chris Sullivan and Julia Fillion.  The students received many 1st, 2nd and 3rd place certificates.  Dover placed second over-all.  This was out of 7 schools, which included Wilmington, Dover, Whitingham, Stamford, Halifax, Marlboro and Readsboro.  Great job!!

NOTES FROM THE BAND ROOM – Mr. McKinney

As the school year draws toward its conclusion, the District Band held its last meeting on Monday, June 2nd.  Students are reminded to bring their instruments to school as lessons are scheduled through the last week of school.  Any summer repairs should be scheduled at this time as well.  Mr. McKinney thanks everyone who worked hard for the spring concert and Memorial Day parade!

GRACE COTTAGE HOSPITAL TO OFFER WEIGHT WATCHERS FAMILY PROGRAM IN SEPTEMBER

Grace Cottage Hospital is fortunate to have been chosen as the first location in the Northeast to offer the Weight Watchers Family Program to the community.  Based on a four-year pilot, this program has proven successful in helping families create a healthy-weight home.  The emphasis is on healthy eating and an active lifestyle, rather than on “dieting.”  Statistics show that children learn their eating and activity habits early in life, so it makes sense for families to approach this issue together.  Grace Cottage has received a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield to cover part of the cost for families to enroll in this new ten-week program, which will be offered starting this fall.  To find our more, call 365-3649.

LAST HOT LUNCH MENU ATTACHED

Would you believe – the last hot lunch menu for the year is enclosed!?  We must have all accounts paid in full with this last envelope.  If there is a credit on your envelope, please deduct it from your payment.  If there is an amount due, please add it to your payment.  If you have any questions, please call the school at 464-5386.

Registration will be from 8 – 8:25a.m.  This “program” will begin at all school sing, and end at 10:15a.m. when children say goodbye to their grandparent(s) and/or special friends, and go back to class.  Please remember, if a special friend is coming, it must be an adult.  Come join the fun!

PLEASE SUPERVISE YOUR CHILDREN

We have had several events held here at school – both during, before and after school.  We must insist that you supervise your children when they are here with you.  Students who come for an event with their parents must remain with them at all times, until it is time to leave.  They are not allowed to go outside on their own without supervision due to liability reasons.  We thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

DOVER SCHOOL HAS A NEW WEBSITE

We have a new website!!  It is doverschool.net

Greg, our technology genius (!!), has set us up on an up-dated site.  There were problems making changes on the old site, and there currently is no contact person within our district that works with the company.  If you would like to check it out – we will have the newsletters and menus listed, please visit our new site!

BAND CONCERT AT LELAND AND GRAY

The spring concert for band students will be on Friday, May 23rd at 6p.m. in the Leland and Gray gym.  Rehearsal will be on Thursday, May 22nd: 3 – 3:30 is cadet band rehearsal; 3:30 – 4 is chorus rehearsal; 4-4:30 is district band rehearsal; 4:30 – 5 is jazz band rehearsal.  Please pick your child up promptly following their rehearsals conclusion.

Students should wear black slacks/skirt and white collared shirts for the concert.  District band students tune up and get seated in the bleacher area.

DRESS FOR SCHOOL

As warmer weather approaches, there is a need to send a reminder home about appropriate and acceptable school dress as it pertains to our school procedures.  This procedure applies to the entire school preschool to grade six.  It states that spaghetti strap tops or halter tops are NOT allowed in school.  Bellies must be covered.  Shorts must cover the entire bottom, and do so even when the child bends over or sits down.  Remember that your children need to wear clothing that allows them to move about and be comfortable for the day.  If they are pulling at shorts or fixing straps, it becomes a distraction for learning or playing.  Shoes that children can play and run in comfortably are recommended and they must have sneakers for PE day.  Although flip-flops and sandals are cool for the feet, they are not practical and do not provide enough support for active movement and playground use.

PLEASE HELP BUILD OUR ROCK WALL

Thanks to the Dover parents, teachers and administration, we now have enough money to start building a rock wall.  During last year’s field day, we had a portable rock wall brought in and the students loved it.  Now the students can’t wait until we have our new permanent rock wall installed.  Grade 5/6 is ready and willing to help in whatever way they can, but need help from parent and community volunteers to help get their feet off the ground.

We would like to see the wall installed before the first of June so the sixth graders may enjoy it before they graduate.  They will set up work dates once materials and volunteers have been gathered.  Please contact Mrs. Neuman’s class if you are willing to assist with this exciting new project!  Here is a list of items needed:   2 x 4’s for framing, ¾ inch plywood, textured paint, primer, climbing holds, hardware and equipment; steel braces, screws, nails, nuts, bolts, some experienced workers and plenty of volunteers!

BASEBALL PARENTS AND PLAYERS - HELP CLEAN UP OUR FIELD

Jeff and Rob are asking that all ball players and parents be at the Dover ball field Saturday, May 10th from 9 – 11a.m. to assist in cleaning up the field and getting it prepared for games.   Many hands make light work!   Please bring a rake if you have one!  See you there!!

SOUTHERN VERMONT TRAIL RIDERS ATV CLUB

The Southern Vermont Trail Riders ATV Club would like to remind children that summer is the time to ride ATV’s, and to please be safe.  Always wear a helmet and protective gear;  supervision is imperative for riders under 16 years of age; never carry a passenger on a single rider machine; ride an age appropriate ATV; ride on legal designated trails; tread lightly.

The local club feels very strongly that safety education is critical to having fewer ATV related injuries or even deaths.  For more information about the club and legal ATV riding visit www.svtr.net.

MOMMY’S MARKETPLACE

Saturday, May 10th from 9 – 2p.m. at the Townshend Town Hall on Rte. 30 in Townshend, Mommy’s Marketplace will hold their bi-annual event.  This is an indoor event featuring a large selection of items for boys and girls birth to teen.  Maternity items, toys and so much more will be available. Find the spring and summer essentials your children need at affordable prices.  This event promises 20 plus people selling their items, so a bargain is sure to be found!  If you have any questions, please call Judy at 874-4020.

FREE COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR IN TOWNSHEND

Health, safety, prizes, food and family fun – all in one short stop!  The “Spring into Health Community Health Fair” in Townshend is Saturday, May 17th from 10 – 2p.m.  This is sponsored by Grace
Cottage Hospital, it’s free.  Free health tests (blood pressure, glucose, glaucoma, cholesterol and more), see the DHART helicopter up close, watch the Vernon Tornado grade school jump ropers and try some of their tricks, meet a K-9 dog, see fire trucks and rescue equipment, ride the bike rodeo (bike helmets for sale at cost), have your child car seats checked, and tour the State Fire Safety House.  Over four dozen health, safety and social service agencies will be on hand to share about their services.  You can even give blood to the Red Cross!  With just a bit of time, you could do wonders for your health, and have lots of fun too!  The “Spring into Health” Community Health Fair will be held at Leland and Gray High School and the Townshend Common.  Please, no dogs.  Call 365-9109 for more information.

DOVER SCHOOL ASSESSMENT

The Commissioner of Education has released Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) reports and I am pleased to announce that once again, Dover made the mark in all areas.

All of our New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) scores in the areas of reading, math and writing exceeded the state’s scores.

Our dedicated staff, the hard work of your children and the support we receive from parents and community have made this all possible.

Thank you and congratulations to everyone. We will have a “Report Night” on June 16, 2008 at 6p.m. in the library here at school to explain in more detail, our assessment data.  Please mark your calendar and join us!
